The restaurant and decor were fantastic and beautiful. We really felt like we were worlds away from Shanghai. The service is spectacular and they're very attentive. Unfortunately the food did not live anywhere up to the decor nor service.

Being a family from the Middle East, we were very excited to try Makan. The pictures and selection of the different entrees were abundant and gorgeous. We couldn't wait to try a little of everything. Unfortunately the actual food did not taste very authentic. The presentation is nice but the execution was questionable. The BBQ platter and shawarma should be grilled...but our sandwiches and platters were soggy and just dripped liquid everywhere. The texture was wet and limp and soggy. The falafel was very good but strangely when I asked for tahini sauce to accompany it they didn't know what I was asking and instead gave me chili sauce. They didn't have garlic mayo called toum either which happens to be a stable of Lebanese cuisine. The fatoush didn't taste like they put any sumac in it. The hummas was good...may need a bit more garlic but the texture was very good.

The kitchen did end up forgetting my BBQ entree and we waited 45 mins for all the food to arrive but the staff was diligent and helpful and investigated where my entree was quickly. There was also a tiny piece of plastic shard in my rice pudding at the end....which the waiter apologized profusely. But strange how it got in there in the first place. I could of cut my tongue or lips and glad my kids did not eat any.

If you look closely, there were many chips in their ceramic table settings which kinda ruins the whole fanciness of the decor...which was an immediate realization that I am not in the sand dunes of Dubai but in China.

It's too bad and we were quite disappointed. We were really trying to find anything good about the food. The pita bread was fantastic...but is it worth the drive all the way from Jinqiao. No. Will we go back when craving Middle Eastern cuisine? No.

I will keep an eye on the reviews and in the future if they improved their execution in grilling and spicing their food to be more authentic, then we will be back.
